Anyone know how to change settings back to be able to view files as "Icons"?

Am in a bind....some time back I opted to change settings so as to get best performance so now don't see files as icons at all.
I need to change it back, but cannot find where I got the option in the first place and causing me many extra hours of work
when using many photo files daily.
(Currently cannot view as icons at all so have to be in Photoshop or something and select the file to even be able to "view" a thumbnail/icon of it).

And, this is not just the simple selection option under "viewing files" where you can select small, medium or large "Icon" viewing.
Now that I made this more advanced setting change to opt for better performance and not appearance, I do not get the option
to view a regular file as an Icon.
When I try to select view as Icon, it just ignores me.

I recall reading and getting the option to change for better performance and less appearance options, but for the life of me I cannot find where I found that option before and so now cannot change back and be able to view files before opening them.

Really stuck.....
